Tournament season is just around the corner! Here are a few pointers about what to expect and what to bring. Overview of Tournaments- Tournaments are all-day events hosted by high schools to give marching bands, their drum lines, and their color guard (“auxiliary”) units opportunities to compete before judges and supportive audiences. The bands are divided and classified by size (Vanguard is currently in Class 3A), with the smaller schools competing in the mornings and the larger schools in the evenings.
Bands are judged on musicianship, the marching and movement of the ensemble, and the effectiveness and showmanship of the program. Elaborate awards ceremonies are held immediately following the competitions. Winning these events is cause for great celebration because the standards are high, but even higher is the expectation that every participant will respect and support the efforts of every other participant.
